Aisle 7: Lighting and Fixtures

Pain and Suffering and Loneliness– Oh My!

In this video, Peter breaks down the important difference between loneliness and aloneness, and between pain and suffering—two pairs that often get confused but shape our inner lives in very different ways.

Peter explains that pain is natural: it’s a signal, a messenger, a form of inner information trying to guide you toward clarity or change. Pain isn’t out to hurt you—it’s trying to reach you. Suffering, however, is something else. Suffering happens when the mind attaches personal identity to the pain, creating stories, spirals, and meaning that deepen the hurt. While pain passes through, suffering settles in and begins splashing around in the puddles it creates.

He also explores loneliness versus aloneness:

  • Loneliness is a sense of lack—craving something external.
  • Aloneness is a state of presence—being with yourself without fear.

Recognize which experience you’re actually in, and how shifting your relationship to pain, identity, and inner quiet can open the door to more grounded self-understanding and less unnecessary suffering.
